European countries by population

This list of European countries by population presents the list of 51 countries and 6 territories and dependencies located in Europe, broadly defined. Transcontinental countries are included if they are members of the Council of Europe. The constituent countries of England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales are combined as the United Kingdom.

The most populated country in Europe is Russia.[1] Though more than 75% of its total land is in Asia, approximately 110 million people, or 78% of its population, are located within its European territory. The most populated country wholly located within Europe is Germany. Only 3% of Turkey's land area is in Europe, but 14% of the total population is situated there.[2]

The largest cities by total land area are Paris, London, Moscow, Berlin, Madrid, and the transcontinental city Istanbul. The most spoken languages of Europe are Russian, Turkish, German, English, French, Italian, Spanish, and Polish.

Table[edit]

Note: The ranking is determined by the given population figures, which are based on the latest available national figures. These figures may be national estimates, or may be somewhat out of date. Therefore the ranking is only approximate in the case of countries that are very close in population size.

Transcontinental countries located in Europe and Asia.
Cyprus, located entirely within Asia but which may be considered European countries due to its political, cultural and sporting ties with Europe.
